Part III Comprehensive Exercises
A.Read the following passage carefully and then translate the underlined sentences into Chinese.
Several schools are trying to cut down on the opportunity to cheat by giving more open-book exams.Others are holding seminars for their teachers to discuss the cheating phenomenon—often with students invited to attend. But psychologists say that the roots of the problem must be dealt with in the home.(1)It is there, they say, that children must be helped to develop enough self-esteem to make occasional failure an unthreatening prospect and enough of a sense of right and wrong to overcome the urge to cheat.
Unfortunately, teachers say,too many parents are abdicating that responsibility.“Students just aren't brought up to see cheating as dishonest,”said Patrick L.Daly, who taught high school in the Detroit area for 30 years before retiring last year.“To them, shoplifting is dishonest;writing a couple of math formulas on their hand is not.”“A child cheats on an exam and his parents get outraged,”said Yong Jay Mulkey, president of the American Institute for Character Education,a San Antonio-based foundation that helps teachers develop students' self-esteem.“Yet he keeps hearing his folks talk about cheating on expense accounts or income taxes. The inconsistency drives children crazy.”
(2)Perhaps most troubling, teachers and psychologists say,is that it is often the most gifted students, the ones who presumably could get good grades without cheating, who are the worst offenders. They are the ones who believe that getting into a top college—or later,a top graduate school—is the most important goal, and will do anything they must to attain it.At first, the pressure is from their parents;eventually, those values become their own.
Poll after pool shows that college students, not just high scholars, are making cheating a way of life.Campus newspapers are full of articles dealing with the subject.Last fall Dartmouth College, devoted almost an entire issue of Common Sense, its new student paper,to thegrowing problem of cheating on campus.Universities are holding special seminars at which professors and students discuss the problem.(3)At least one school, the University of Illinois, issues a pamphlet for its faculty that describes some of the more ingenious methods students may use to cheat(written crib sheets attached to cap visors, oral ones playing on a Sony Walkman)and ways to stop them.Several others are tightening their computer security,af- ter having discovered that computer hackers were breaking into electronic college files in or- der to alter their grades.Even the most outspoken opponents of cheating are less critical of youngsters who cheat.“I wouldn't be comfortable with an honor code like ours in grammar school or even high school,”said Mr.James R.Socas, chairman of the honor committee at the University of Virginia.“Our system really says,‘You are on the threshold of being an adult,of taking responsibility for your actions.'Young people must be allowed to make mistakes.”Did he cheat when he was younger?“Sure.”
(4)Increasingly,professors are turning to open-book exams that test students more on how well they have learned to apply concepts than on how well they have memorized unimportant facts or formulas. The approach serves a dual purpose:it fosters conceptual thinking and makes crib sheets and peeking useless.
“I give open-book problems without unique solutions,”said Stanley R.Liberty, dean of the engineering school at the University of Nebras-ka.“Students know there's an unbelievably low probability of two people coming up with the same approach.”
B.Read the passage and answer the questions with the fewest words.
AIDS(Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome)is a fatal disease that destroys the immune system.More than four out of five AIDS cases in the United States so far have been homosexual or bisexual men or druggers. Not all those who are infected with the AIDS virus, now numbering one and a half million Americans, will develop the disease, but scientists assume that carriers of the virus can spread it to others through sexual intercourse or exchange of blood or their bodily fluids.
Concern about the spread of the disease has brought demands for testing to detect evidence of infection. But proposals for testing have been met with a storm of questions and counterproposals from health ,officials, advocates of civil rights, and gay right activists.Should testing of people at special risk be voluntary or mandatory(强制性的)?How wide should testing be?What uses will be made of the results? If the secret is disclosed,is there a danger that people discovered to be carriers will lose their jobs, housing, and access to public places?
At a meeting in February 1987,participants in a federally sponsored conference on the control of AIDS aGREed that testing should be voluntary and accompanied by safeguards to protect the privacy of those who are tested. The consensus, however, was ruined by disagreements about definition of terms. One participant pointed out that“mandatory”,“routine”,“standard”,“required”and“confidential”were used in dif- ferent ways.
As AIDS claims more victims—by 1991 health officials estimated that more than 50,000 Americans will die of AIDS each year—public anxiety will mount and the demand for mandatory testing and control may grow.State Laws written in the 1920s and 1930s to limit the spread of sexually transmitted diseases may not be adequate to protect against AIDS.But it remains unclear whether new laws requiring mandatory testing would produce sufficient health benefits to justify possible violations of civil rights.
Questions:
1.AIDS testing is demanded because of
2.Not every AIDS virus-infected person will
3.The participants in a conference on the control of AIDS aGREed that testing should be voluntary but they did not agree on .
4.According to the last paragraph, what remains unsolved about the new laws in 1990s?
5.What is the main idea of the passage?
